It is especially important for sea level to remain relatively unchanged during barrier island formation and growth. The Johns Pass (JP)Blind Pass (BP) system (Figure 36(c)) is an excellent example of multi-inlet morphodynamics (Wang et al., 2011; Wang and Beck, 2012). Ritchie and Penland's (1990) model of dune and overwash terrains on a Louisiana barrier island as modified by Hesp and Short (1999) defines five terrain types: (1) washover sheet (large-scale bare sheets); (2) washover terrace; (3) discontinuous foredune and overwash fan; (4) continuous foredune and scattered nebkha fields; and (5) continuous foredune and foredune plain. Along the southern Atlantic coast, rising sea waters flooded coasts and river Mangroves include several species of low trees and shrubs that thrive in the warm, shallow, saltwater environments of the lower latitudes. If sea level changes are too drastic, time will be insufficient for wave action to accumulate sand into a dune, which will eventually become a barrier island through aggradation. This account of human impacts on them over more than 100 years is taken from Nordstrom (1994, 2000) and is depicted in Figure 15.7. As erosion and weathering attacked the Appalachians, gravel, sand, and mud flowed down their eastern slopes to blanket and bury the bedrock topography of the East Coast, creating a broad apron of deep soils and sediments called the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
